Ruler
FreeRues (RVIIS, RVES) · coins c. 10 BC–AD 10
Rues is known only from four types of coin struck north of the Thames around 10 BC–AD 10, towards the end of Tasciovanos's coinage. The name is written RVIIS or RVES, II standing for E. Evans read it as RVFI and wondered whether it belonged to a son of Tasciovanos called 'Rufinus', which he called 'the merest speculation'. Scholars have usually treated Rues as a sub-king, co-ruler or associate of Tasciovanos. Because the coins follow Tasciovanos's bronzes so closely, Kretz suggests instead that RVES may be a title or nickname, perhaps meaning 'red', used by Tasciovanos himself; he offers this as speculation. The lion and eagle is the most Roman-looking of the four types: both its designs are copied from Roman coins.,
Known for Bronze coins only; the lion and eagle unit, both sides copied from Roman coins.
People Catuvellauni: A people north of the Thames in today's Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, centred on Verlamion (St Albans). Rues's coins are found across this area and into Essex, Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.,
